Scottish Football Journey

Glebe Park, Brechin City

I've been to Glebe Park 3 times, twice with Aberdeen to watch a friendly and once to watch Brechin play Ayr United in a Scottish Division 2 game. The last time I went was a 2-2 draw between Brechin and Aberdeen in a pre season friendly. This game also marked the first chance for Aberdeen fans to see new captain, Paul Hartley. The fixture was also a memorial match for the late David H Will CBE, former Brechin City Chairman, SFA president and FIFA Vice President. A good crowd turned out for the game and it was a good game too. Both teams set out to attack and Mark Mcghee's team consisted of new signings and young players. We sat in the very impressive seated stand behind one goal, opposite the covered terrace behind the other. The stand was almost full but quite a lot of fans decided to stand around the pitch than sit.

The game started brightly for Aberdeen and Maguire's header crashed off the crossbar. But not long after Aberdeen took a deserved 1-0 lead thanks to young Fraser Fyvie who got on to an Andrew Considine cross and nodded home. Aberdeen were on top and unlucky headers from Darren Mackie and new signing Josh Magennis prevented Aberdeen from going 2-0 then 3-0 up. Brechin were not out of the game though and had chances of their own with the impressive Rory McAllister's shot deflecting off Zander Diamond and Mark Howard had to react well to save. The last action of the half saw a Paul Hartley free kick saved by David Scott.

The second half was in favour of Brechin, and a loose ball from Howard to Considine was intercepted by McAllister and he played the ball across goal for David Mckenna to level things up. Brechin were boosted by the goal and Aberdeen were shell shocked. The impressive King saw his shot just go wide of the Aberdeen goal. They did however take a deserved lead on 71 minutes when a cross from the right was bulleted in by Rory McAllister. He was certainly showing his good form from last season and was causing all sorts of trouble for the Aberdeen defence. Now Aberdeen had to pick things up and Scott Vernon was showing some good footwork but it led to nothing. But on the last few minutes of the game Andy Considine headed in a Paul Hartley free kick much to the delight of the travelling fans.

Of all the 3 games I've been to Glebe Park I have enjoyed my days out every time. It's a really nice, tidy ground and the team are well managed. They play some good football and I wish them all the best for promotion to Division 1.
