Crombie Park, Culter
Well I was in for a goal fest here at Crombie Park, as Culter were to turn up the style on the day they received the Superleague trophy. Crombie Park is a nice enough pitch, with a slight slope from one end to the other, good pavilion, really good bovrils and 2 extra training pitches adjacent to the pitch itself. So overall it was a really good setup here.
Stonehaven got the first shot at goal though, as their number 5, who I knew as Scott MacGregor, took the ball from a short free kick but shot well over from 35 yards. But this wasn’t to worry Culter as they scored almost immediately form the resultant goal kick. Number 11 outpaced Scott and ran down the sideline only to cut back to number 8 who put Culter 1-0 up with a low shot into the bottom left corner. Poor defending from Scott but he kept his head up. Stonehaven were then awarded a free kick near the halfway line. Their number 3 hit the ball in long towards the back post only for number 2 to put it wide across goal, shocking miss.
Culter then scored again from a brilliant left foot strike by number 10 sailed into the top corner from the edge of the box. It was quite an even game despite the score line favouring the champions. Stonehaven were then awarded another free kick. This time the ball was drifted in and not cleared and number 9 just put the ball wide from a header. Culter almost added a third through number 2 whose left foot shot was palmed away by the keeper only to see number 8 blast the rebound over in to the training pitch. Stonehaven were unlucky not to pull a goal back 10 minutes from the interval when their number 9 connected with the ball to make the keeper produce an acrobatic save to stop the striker’s volley from distance. The final action of the half saw a spectacular overhead attempt from Culter’s number 9 fall just wide of the post.
Almost straight from the kick off saw Culter add a third to their tally. Their impressive right back, number 2, scooped the ball over the Stonehaven defence to number 10 who cut back for the advancing number 8 to prod the ball home. He was having a really good game number 8, but he was later booked for dissent after complaining about a wrongly awarded foul to Stonehaven and I agreed with him, the Stonehaven attacker left a foot in to the goalkeeper but decision went with the forward strangely. This half was to see endless attacks from Culter and number 10 had a shot which just went wide. Stonehaven did have one last effort through their number 3 but again, his shot went wide.
4 more goals were to be added in the last half hour of the game. Some really good play on the left between 8 and 11 saw 11 cross the ball to 10 who lifted the ball over the oncoming keeper for 4-0. Their 5th came from a poor header back from Stonehaven’s 11 and substitute for Culter, number 12 volley the ball into the top right corner. Almost straight after, number 10 charged down Scott and outmuscled the defender before slotting the ball past the keeper for 6-0. Finally, the scoring was completed when number 2 took on 3-4 players before playing through number 9 and the striker rounded the keeper before hitting the ball home. The game couldn’t finish quickly for Stonehaven and the result was a bit harsh on the goalkeeper, who actually had some really good saves. Culter were just too good for Stonehaven and they picked up their trophy after the game.
