Scottish Football Journey

The Haughs, Turriff United

It was a day to forget at The Haughs, Turriff.  It was the Aberdeenshire Cup final between Cove and Buckie Thistle. The 2 best sides in the league were going head to head for the first piece of silverware of the season. This was my first visit to Turriff and the ground was very small. The side we were at was very tight and couldn't fit more than 2 people standing one in front of another. I believe renovations have been going on since my visit due to the banks flooding The Haughs. This game was one of the worst performances by Cove, and a thoroughly deserved win by Buckie, who ran out 2-0 winners. The first goal came from a looping shot from Stephen Bruce sailed over Stuart McKenzie to send the Buckie fans wild and the Cove fans in to depression. The 2nd came just before half time from Mara Bruce converting a header from a cross from the right.

The 2nd half Cove huffed and puffed but couldn't break the Buckie defence down. On loan Scott Gates wasting the best chance and it was not to be Coves day. To make things bad to worse, striker Paul Tosh was shown a second yellow card and given his marching orders. The game ended and Buckie won 2-0 and went on to lift the Highland League trophy at the end of the year. Now that the same fixture appeared the year after in this year's Aberdeenshire Cup with Cove being convincing 3-0 winners, will history repeat itself and the winners go on to lift the league trophy? I hope so.

The Haughs is a very small tight ground. But now that it has a new stand being constructed and new railings around the pitch I'm hoping to go to another game there and have a new view for it. I know that it will be a tough game there against Turriff as they ended the famous 3 year unbeaten home run of Cove Rangers earlier this season, so whatever the result, I'm hoping for a great game and a Cove win and more importantly, a happier day out at The Haughs.
